Applying for Dutch nationality

There are two ways in which you can apply for Dutch nationality: naturalisation and option. The conditions for naturalisation and option are explained in detail on the website of the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND). This page deals mainly with naturalisation for people living outside the Netherlands.

Naturalisation

Spouses and registered or civil partners of Dutch nationals can apply for Dutch nationality if they meet a number of conditions. The conditions and application procedure are outlined in the brochure Hoe kunt u Nederlander worden in het buitenland? (only available in the Dutch language). It is not possible to apply for Dutch nationality on the basis of marriage to a Dutch national if you are living in the country of which you are a citizen (i.e. a British citizen living in the UK cannot apply for naturalisation).

Naturalisation exam

In order to be able to submit an application for Dutch nationality, the applicant must have passed a naturalisation exam ('inburgeringsexamen voor naturalisatie'). The brochure Inburgeringsexamen: voorwaarde voor naturalisatie in het buitenland (only available in the Dutch language) provides more information on the test.

People who reside abroad can take the exam in the Netherlands. For further information, please visit www.inburgeren.nl. If you are living in the UK and wish to take the test at the Dutch Embassy in London you will need to make an appointment  to register for the exam by sending an email to the Embassy. You will need to register in person and have a national passport that is valid for at least six months from the date of registration.

Option

There are various situations in which you can apply for Dutch nationality by way of a so-called 'optieverklaring'. These are explained on the IND website.

One category that is eligible to apply for Dutch nationality in this way are children born before 1 January 1985 to a Dutch mother and a non-Dutch father. If you are living in the UK and think you are eligible to apply you can find more information on the conditions and application process elsewhere on this website.
