41 High time for new and affordable medicines

Getting innovative medicines to patients more quickly, at a socially acceptable price. That is the aim of the expert meeting ‘Innovation for the benefit of the patient’ being held in Amsterdam on 1 and 2 March. The Europe Building is the venue where experts will meet to consider the potential and prerequisites for flexible market access with early agreements on the price of innovative medicines.

42 ‘No trade-off between security and human rights,’ says Koenders

‘Even when confronting the gravest violence, there can be no trade-off between security and human rights; on the contrary, solutions and policies firmly based on the rule of law and rooted in respect for human rights are more effective and sustainable,’ Dutch foreign minister Bert Koenders said in a speech last Monday.

45 Register to vote!

Local elections, including for the London Assembly and the Mayor of London, will take place across the UK on 5 May 2016. Did you know that Dutch citizens aged over 18 who are resident in the UK are entitled to vote in local elections in the UK? To do so, you will need to register to vote by the deadline of 18 April 2016.

46 Ambassador Smits presents Dutch EU Presidency priorities

Ambassador Simon Smits presented the priorities of the Netherlands EU presidency to the European Union Committee to the House of Lords on 2 February.

47 Foreign Investment in the Netherlands creates 9,300 jobs in 2015

More than 300 foreign companies like Tesla and easyJet jointly invested € 1.87 billion in the Netherlands last year. Together these companies created an additional 9,300 jobs. The Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency (NFIA) and its regional partners assisted in the attraction of these investment projects. In the past year they joined forces under the Invest in Holland label. As an operational unit of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, the NFIA is responsible for the realization of 7,779 jobs.

48 Prime Minister Rutte addresses the European Parliament

Prime Minister Mark Rutte visited the European Parliament in Strasbourg on 20 January. In an address to the plenary session, he outlined the priorities of the Dutch Presidency of the EU Council.

49 Contacting an Embassy or Consulate

If you are in trouble abroad and can't sort things out for yourself, ask the local Dutch embassy or consulate for help. But be aware that consular assistance can cost money.

50 Travellers can reach foreign ministry 24/7 at +31 247 247 247

Foreign minister Bert Koenders and travel expert Floortje Dessing have launched a new central helpline for travellers. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs can now be reached 24 hours a day, seven days a week at +31 247 247 247 for practical travel tips and assistance. Travellers abroad can also contact the Ministry online and via Twitter. It is estimated that about 3,000 people per day will use the new services.
