Former Dutch sailor sworn in as new Honorary Consul for the Netherlands in Birmingham

Dutchman Bert Thijssen, who lives in Worcester, was yesterday sworn in by Dutch Ambassador to the UK Simon Smits as the new Honorary Consul for the Kingdom of the Netherlands for Birmingham and the West Midlands.

Bert is Sales & Marketing Director for B Hepworth & Co, Ltd, who produce performance wiper systems for the marine, rail and automotive industries, exporting to over 50 countries. Hepworth also offers precision fabrication solutions.

Having begun his career in the Royal Netherlands Navy, and subsequently working for nautical instrument company Observator Instruments BV in the Netherlands, Bert has over 30 years’ experience in the industry. He moved to Worcester in 2005.

Upon his appointment, Bert said: “I am absolutely delighted to take on the role of Honorary Consul and I look forward to representing the Netherlands in Birmingham and the West Midlands”.

Bert succeeds Roger Williams, who served as the Netherlands’ Honorary Consul in Birmingham and the West Midlands from 2001-2016.

There are currently 13 Honorary Consuls for the Kingdom of the Netherlands for the United Kingdom (Aberdeen, Belfast, Birmingham, Cardiff, Dover, Edinburgh, Guernsey, Hull, Liverpool/Manchester (combined), Southampton, Hamilton (Bermuda) and Gibraltar). The role of an Honorary Consul is to represent the Kingdom of the Netherlands, to build regional economic networks, and to provide emergency consular assistance to Dutch citizens.
