Visit Belfast by Ambassador Smits

As part of the Dutch EU Presidency programme, Ambassador Smits made an official visit to Belfast, Northern Ireland, last week. The Ambassador had the privilege of meeting the First Minister, Arlene Foster, who received him at Stormont Castle which is located on the beautiful Stormont Estate.

The Ambassador had a most enjoyable tour of the Stormont parliamentary buildings and whilst there met with the newly elected Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly, Robin Newton MLA who presented the Ambassador with a beautiful gift of traditionally Northern Irish Belleek porcelain. The Ambassador also spoke with Assembly members on the committee of the Executive Office, discussing the highlights of the Dutch EU Presidency.

The visit was concluded with meetings and a small reception at the EU Commission Representation which was a great opportunity to exchange views on Northern Ireland, the EU referendum and of course the brilliant performance of the Northern Ireland football team at EURO2016!
